Followers of Jesus Christ are an Advent people, anticipating the future with great expectation. We are a people excited about what is coming and what is going to transpire. As believers, that’s our MO -- ‘modus operandi’. It’s just a fact that we are a people oriented toward the future. And when everything else is considered, that’s the only way one can “fully” live in the present.
But there’s a “side-effect,” that accompanies this Advent mindset that we have -- it’s a personality trait that does not contribute to our ‘well-being’ at all -- IMPATIENCE. Non-believers are impatient as well, but the source of our impatience is somewhat different. Because believers are future oriented, when what we anticipate is not happening to our satisfaction or our personal timetable is ‘dead in the water’ our impatience seems to explode.
Impatience is not a character quality we want in our life. We must also remember that it’s possible to be blind to it as well. Impatience is commonly created by the emotions of fear and anger. The issue for us is to discover what we can do to begin correcting this undesirable trait. In this Bible lesson, Dr. Robbins shows just how angry and fearful our culture and world has become. It seems to be at a point where something must be done. But, as usual, it all has to start “with us” as individuals.
Listen carefully how Thomas Q. Robbins suggests that a proper understanding of the Advent of the Christmas event and the promise of Christ’s second coming is the prescription for impatience. The story of God’s Love is the source of healing. How we implement that Love in the world and in our lives is the issue.
